The Academic Computing and Communications Center seeks an experienced and self-motivated System Administrator for a permanent position as a Research Programmer in the Instructional Technology Group. The System Administrator will join a team of other system administrators and programmers responsible for implementation, development, integration and ongoing operation of the University's central learning management system (Blackboard), and related instructional services and support. The position reports directly to the Assistant Director for Academic Computing who directs the Instructional Technology Group.

Primary Responsibilities: * Oversee the day-to-day system administration of the university's learning management system (LMS), including system performance, utilization, maintenance and support, as well as course site creation and student enrollment. * Configure and modify the LMS to match the university and Academic Computing policies. * Participate in the planning, testing and implementation of new LMS releases, service packs, patches, LMS server extensions and hardware upgrades. * Perform LMS back-end system fine-tuning, including Oracle database maintenance and optimization. * Take part in maintaining and programming existing and future LMS system integration and automation with third-party back-end systems (like SunGuard Banner, uPortal, LDAP) and custom authentication systems. * Run Unix system administration shell scripts, tools and programs, regularly. * Help coordinate course content back-up, archiving and recovery * Run periodic system usage statistics and reports. * Use LMS System Administrator expertise, as needed, to help troubleshoot complex user support problems. * Interact with vendor and other technical staff to plan system upgrades and device problem resolution. * Provide training to faculty and teaching staff on new LMS features and enhancements. |

Minimum Education and Work Experience:
Bachelor's degree and two years relevant work experience.
Two years experience in Blackboard enterprise system administration or comparable learning management system.
Working knowledge of Solaris, Apache, tomcat, Oracle, Java, Java Server Pages, perl and Unix shell scripting.
Demonstrated ability to exercise initiative, work well with other programmers and clients, as well as handle multiple projects and priorities.
Good familiarity with teaching and learning technology and faculty support.
Team players with excellent English verbal/written skills.
Skills Desired:
Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or related field.
Extensive programming experience in Web-based database-driven applications, Java, JSP, Servlets, SQL/Oracle, perl, php, Web Services, Banner and uPortal.
Familiarity with Blackboard Building Block APIs and development.
Experience with Windows system administration.
Desire to acquire new skills and stay current in a rapidly changing field.
