      Title:
      Student-to-Faculty Ratio (DL/Blended JPME)
      Content:

Here at Joint Forces Staff College (JFSC), we are looking at defining our student-to-faculty ratio requirement for the Advanced Joint Professional Military Education (AJPME) course.  The resident Joint Combined Warfighting School (JCWS) attempts to reach a 4:1 ratio. Unfortunately however, AJPME is severely understaffed with several instructors teaching two seminars of up to 23 students each in different phases of the 40-wk blended program. Ideally we need to justify extra faculty to maximize student learning/collaboration potential and be able to offer additional seminars as required.

Does your school have any guidance that we could leverage regarding student/faculty ratio in DL/blended learning programs? Thank you.

      Regards,
      Angela

    • We try to keep any seminar from going beyond a 12:1 ratio, however in some limited situations that's been expanded to as many as 16.

    • Thanks for the quick reply. 16 or less would be ideal for us too based on our experience with larger seminars. I assume your numbers are based on experience. Let me know if you come across any formal justification to help our cause.

    • It's a number reached by comparing learning objectives/learning outcomes of content/lessons as they relate to Bloom's taxonomy. Ultimately a judegement call of a number to shoot for from an educational quality standpoint, while considering economic factors and budget constraints. If you're looking for a formula of how to get to a number and why... I don't know that one exists.
